I’m back after a few days off from blogging! I needed a little breather after completing the NaBloPoMohttp://missmusicnerd.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?action=edit&post=292&message=1&_wp_original_http_referer=http%3A%2F%2Fmissmusicnerd.wordpress.com%2F challenge, and of course McDoc and I had our 1st wedding anniversary to celebrate!!!
We had a lovely, if too brief, getaway in Windsor — where, by the way, everyone else was visiting to watch the Red Bull [...]

One of my favorite stories from music history concerns the audience reaction at the première of Igor Stravinsky’s ballet Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring), which was given in Paris on this day in 1913 by the Ballets Russes. (I mentioned the piece during my May Day Spring Celebration post at the beginning [...]

NaBloPoMo Day 11!
Another quick post, while the follow-up to yesterday percolates…
It’s hard to believe it, but it’s been nearly a year since McDoc and I arrived in Detroit. One of the first things we discovered after arriving here was a music festival put on by the Detroit Symphony called 8 Days in June. It was [...]

NaBloPoMo Day 6!
In yesterday’s post, I mentioned a few of the seminal composers and musical movements that developed during the 20th century, and that, depending on your point of view, either a) advanced the field of music in exciting ways, casting off the shackles of outmoded 19th-century Romanticism and opening up whole new worlds of [...]

NaBloPoMo Day 3!
Part of my effort to spring out of winter hibernation mode has included taking steps (literally! ) to mend my sedentary ways. To that end, I did the Mind Over Matter 5k walk this morning. It’s billed as a “Charity Run/Walk for Mental Health Awareness & Suicide Prevention,” so I was proud [...]

Miss Music Nerd surged past 1000 hits this week! And that’s after less than a month! (I imported some older posts from my other blog, Our Detroit Odyssey, but I started this blog on Dec. 2nd.)
Here’s some music to celebrate, from the 30 Days Project — something that has a good beat, that you can [...]

In the previous post, I wrote about the passing of my first composition professor Andrew Imbrie on December 5th. It turns out two other important figures in classical music died on that same day: American musicologist H. Wiley Hitchcock and German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen.
I want to talk a little bit about Stockhausen, because he [...]

I’m terribly sad to report that I just found out about the passing of my first composition professor, Andrew Imbrie. I studied with him as an undergraduate at U.C. Berkeley, and he was the subject of my master’s thesis at New York University.
Professor Imbrie was a sort of musical father figure to me. He could [...]

When McDoc and I first moved to the Detroit area and discovered that there actually is a growing scene here for new classical music, I set a goal for myself to have a piece performed in the area before the end of 2007. I reached my goal this weekend!
That’s percussionist Ian Ding performing Kitchen Sink [...]
